최경은 : 네, 석진 씨? (네) 오늘 우리 뭐에 대해서 이야기 할까요?
Kyeongeun : So, Seokjin? (Yes) What shall we talk about today?
진석진 : 네. 오늘은 노약자석에 대해서 한번 얘기해 봐요.
Seokjin : Yes. Today let’s talk about seating for noyakja.
최경은 : 아... 노약자석.
Kyeongeun : Ah... seating for noyakja.
진석진 : 네. 경은 씨. (네) 오늘 출근 할 때 뭐 타고 오셨어요?
Seokjin : Yes. Kyeongeun. (Yes) How did you get to work today?
최경은 : 저는 출근할 때 전철도 타고 버스도 타요.

진석진 : 네, 알겠습니다. 노약자. 이게 한자로 이루어진 말인데, (네)
제가 아주 쉽게 풀어드릴게요. (네) “노”자는 나이가 들었다는 뜻을 나타냅니다. (아...)그리고 “약”자는 몸이 약하다는 뜻을 나타내요. (아...) “자”는 놈(놈?)원래 “놈 자” 자인데 (네) 사람을 나타내죠.
Seokjin : Okay, fine. Noyakja [the elderly and infirm]. This word is made of hanja [Chinese
characters], (Yes) and I’ll give an easy explanation. “No” means old. (Ah….) “Yak”
means infirm. (Ah…) “Ja” means guy. (Guy?) Well it originally means “guy” and means person.
최경은 : 아... 그러면 나이 들고 (네) 약한 사람을 말하는 건가요?
Kyeongeun : Ah… So it means someone old (Yes) and infirm?
진석진 : 그렇죠. (그러면) 나이가 들었거나 몸이 약한 사람.
Seokjin : That’s right. (Then) Someone old or infirm.
최경은 : 임산부들은요?
Kyeongeun : What about imsanbu [pregnant women]?
진석진 : 임산부도 뱃속에 아기가 있으니까 몸이 무겁잖아요.
Seokjin : Pregnant women have babies in them so their bodies are heavy.
최경은 : 아... 뱃속에 아기가 있는 임신한 사람을 ‘임산부’라고 말하죠? (그렇죠) 임산부도 ‘노약자’에 들어가네요?

최경은 : 근데 진짜 신기한 게 (네) 전철에 아무리 사람이 많아도 (네)
노약자석은 항상 비어 있잖아요.

Kyeongeun : Yes. Subway with too many people. (Yes) Subway that is like hell (Yes, it’s very uncomfortable), so ‘hell subway’. There are so many people in the morning rush hour that sometimes I feel like my feet are floating on air.
진석진 : 발이 떠 있어요?
Seokjin : Your feet are floating?
최경은 : 네. 사람이 너무 많아서 (네) 서 있는 채로 잘 수도 있어요.

최경은 : 네. 꽉 차 있기 때문에 (네) 그런 지옥철에서도 노약자석에는 젊은 사람들은 안 앉죠?

최경은 : 아, 아니에요? (네, 네) 근데 저도 사실은 석진 씨처럼 지하철에서는 절대 노약자석에 안 앉는데 (네) 버스에서는 사실 좀 사람들이 앉잖아요.

Kyeongeun : Yes, yes. But I once took the bus before (Yes) and sat in the noyakjaseok because I was so tired. (Hmm…) And I didn’t intend to (Yes) but I fell asleep. (I see, I see.) And when I opened my eyes a grandmother (Ah…) was standing right in front of me. (Oh, no.)
최경은 : 그래서 눈을 떴는데, 너무... 창피했어요, 사실은. 일부러 잔 게 아닌데도 (네) 왠지 모르게 (네) 빨리 비켜 드렸어야 됐는데 못 비켜 드렸으니까 (네. 맞아요, 맞아요) 창피해서 벌떡 일어났는데 버스가 덜컹 흔들리는 거예요. 그래서 저도 모르게 벌떡 일어났다가 (다시) 다시 딱 앉아 버렸어요. 그래서 제 얼굴이 정말 빨개져서 (네) 더 창피한 거죠. 그래서 벌떡 일어나서 도망갔던 기억이 있어요.
Kyeongeun : So I opened my eyes and I was so… embarrassed. Really. Even if I didn’t sleep on purpose, I should have gotten up immediately but I didn’t. (Yes, that’s right.) I sprang up from the seat because I was embarrassed but the bus suddenly swerved so I wound up standing up and sitting down again. (Again) My face got really red

running away.
진석진 : 아, 참... 버스에 탔을 때 (네) 정말 노약자 분들이 눈에 보이자마자 바로 양보할 때 (네) 그게 제일 좋은 거예요. (맞아요) 하지만 저 같은 경우에는 조금만 더 앉아 있다가 양보해 드려야지 (아...) 그런 생각을 하다가...
Seokjin : Ah, by the way... When you’re on the bus (Yes) it’s best to give up your seat as soon as you see a noyakja. (That’s right.) But for me, I sometimes think, “I’ll sit a bit more and then give up the seat…” (Ah…)

Kyeongeun : You’re being wrong. (That’s right.) There are people who pretend they’re sleeping so that’s why people get scolded. (Yes, that’s right. You get scolded.) Even if you really fall asleep and aren’t pretending, you get scolded. (Yes) Don’t do that, Seokjin.
